Translating literally to the “Land of the Hill People,” Mizoram, has one of the highest percentages of dense forest cover in the nation, rich with bamboo and over 640 species of bird. Holding pristine, rolling green hills, dense bamboo forests, and deep cultural heritage, in it’s perimeter, Mizoram is one of the most literate states in India, generally sitting comfortably with a literacy rate well above 91%—second only to Kerala. The Mizo society is deeply rooted in an ethical code called Tlawmngaihna, which means a person should always be unselfish, hospitable, and ready to help others before themselves. The state is highly regarded for its intricate cane and bamboo work, alongside the brightly colored, traditional Puan cotton shawls. The puan is still worn and utilised in key festivals and festivities. While traditionally, the puan was worn by both men and women, it is now predominantly worn by women. Mizoram is well known for its women-led economy, where female entrepreneurs are the backbone of local markets.
